Creating Your Ideal Outdoor Living Space

With summer just around the corner, Darling Homes designs in Houston and Dallas are built for homeowners to enjoy both indoor and outdoor living. While Darling Homes offers a variety of home designs, options are plentiful for shoppers looking to get the most out of the inside and outside of their homes.

Courtyards, front porches and backyards can be found in communities throughout both cities, and Darling Homes’ Design Gallery and Model Home Branding Manager, Lee Crowder, is sharing helpful tips  to make the most out of your outdoor spaces for years to come.

“Courtyards are an extension of the home,” Crowder said. “They can function as an extension of the living room, with plenty of outdoor seating.”

According to Crowder, options that can transform your Darling Homes courtyard into a functional living space are placing furniture near to the kitchen or indoor living room and potentially including a TV. On front porches, Crowder recommends keeping a well-maintained area with simple furniture pieces and decorative items.

“The front porch is the first glimpse of your personality, your design style and it’s a reflection of what the inside of your home is going to look like,” she said.

Personality and décor should translate to the backyard area as well. Crowder recommends  making sure the backyard space feels like an extension of the indoor living areas. Arranging furniture, such as a large table built to fit 6 to 8 people, near to the indoor kitchen can help create a natural-feeling outdoor dining space.

“For covered areas, I’d recommend upholstered furniture. If it’s uncovered, go without cushions for ease,” Crowder said. “Other good furniture options can include items like storage benches where you can store the cushions inside of it when not in use.”

A key element to making outdoor living areas feel functional, friendly and ready to use is the decor. Crowder recommends using things that can pull ‘double duty’, such as a candle with citronella in it or a live potted plant that can sit on the table as a centerpiece.

“With planters, I always recommend adding in an evergreen element so you have something that lasts all year and doesn’t have to be changed every year,” she said. Flowers, herbs and other plants make great seasonal additions to outdoor planters.

Adding in extra personalization can go a long way as well. Whether you choose a rustic-style picnic table, speakers for music or string lighting, there are plenty of ways to add a personal or fun touch to your outdoor living area.

“Backyard games like bocce ball, ladder golf or croquet can be a great thing to have,” Crowder said. Getting creative with ideas for outdoor entertainment can be fun as well. Setting up a sheet and a projector for an outdoor movie night, a chalkboard on a back fence or s’mores kits by the fire pit for dessert can all add an extra piece of home to the backyard.

No matter how you envision your ideal outdoor living area, Darling Homes has a home design ready to help you turn your dream into a reality.

Experiencing the Darling Difference

When you walk into a Darling Homes model, it should already feel like home. Lee Crowder, Design Gallery and Model Home Branding Manager, discusses how every element of a Darling home is thoughtfully planned from the location to the design and sales experience to create a unique, positive experience for Dallas and Houston homebuyers.

“When you first walk into a Darling home, it really should feel like you’re coming to someone’s house. You should hear the music, smell the scent, it should feel special – like someone is welcoming you into their house,” Crowder said.

Highest Quality Locations

Long before construction begins, Darling Homes works to create the best possible experience for shoppers – starting with location. Whether you’re seeking a cozy neighborhood, a gated community or resort-style amenities, Darling has a something to fit your desires.

“Location is where people start their journey,” Crowder said. “It’s about amenities, school districts, the lifestyle that you want, and then finding the home plan that works for you.”

Innovating Designs

Darling’s homes designs appeal to a broad range of homebuyers and include many attributes not commonly found elsewhere. One thing that the homebuilder always provides its customers is a home filled with authentic architectural touches that you notice from the moment you enter the front door.

“Details are what it’s all about,” Crowder said.

Some of Darling Homes’ signature attributes come through in design details, such as thoughtfully planned transitions. These can take form in spacious entryways with arches that define different living areas, while providing a natural flow throughout the home.

Pairing varied ceiling heights, such as high ceilings in the living room with lower heights in dining areas, create an intimate volume that helps sound disperse through the home and creates a cozy atmosphere.

Another element that Crowder said stands out in the home designs is the placement of the study.

“In a lot of homes, the office space is right in the front when you walk in. In many of our larger products, we make sure to put the study in the back of the house so that it is private and truly is an extension of the workplace,” Crowder said.

Commitment to the Customer Experience

From homesite selection to interior personalization at the Design Gallery, Darling Homes is dedicated to giving customers an individualized and enjoyable experience.

“Hopefully, you feel and see something in yourself in the models,” Crowder said. “It should be a personalized experience, like something you would do with a friend or family.”

(Community) Sales Managers dedicate time to talk to shoppers to ensure they find the right home design for their lifestyle. From start to finish, the Darling team works together to provide a memorable journey for Texas homebuyers.

“I hope that when people walk through our models they’re inspired and excited,” Crowder said. “I hope it makes them feel at ease and excited about a future they didn’t know was within their grasp.”

It’s Time for Spring Home Maintenance

Spring is in the air, and with the warmer weather and sunshine comes the time for annual home maintenance to keep your Houston or Dallas Darling home in tip-top shape year after year.

We’ve all heard the term ‘spring cleaning,’ but checking through the exteriors and interiors of your home after winter passes ensures any wear and tear or weather damage is managed immediately and helps keep your home functioning well through the years.

Checking the roof for storm damage and cleaning out the gutters is a great way to begin preparing your home for spring and summer. Fall and winter can leave a lot of natural debris in gutters, screens and on patios. Cleaning off these areas makes your Darling home feel fresh and ready for the upcoming summertime.

Maintaining your yard is a key element, though many people have different styles and techniques -for outdoor upkeep. Checking your lawn mower and sprinkler system to ensure they are properly functioning helps prepare for summer yard maintenance. Planting flowers in planters or a flower bed helps to brighten up the outside area with summer colors.

Once the outside of your home is ready for warm weather, it’s time to head inside. Spring cleaning is the perfect opportunity to check over your house systems, putting new batteries in fire alarms or running a security alarm test.

Changing out old air filters for fresh new filters, cleaning off fans and checking lightbulbs are a few of the ways homeowners can prepare for spring and summer. Many people also take advantage of spring’s new beginnings to deep clean their home from the floorboards to the ceiling to start the season with a clean, comfortable environment.

After the home maintenance is complete, Darling homeowners can head outdoors to enjoy a wide array of community amenities or visit local parks and recreational areas to enjoy the beautiful weather.
